Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by the renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Tan Kah Kee, becoming the first university established by an overseas Chinese person in China’s modern educational history. Its advantages involving overseas Chinese, Taiwan, special economic zones and the sea, together with its distinctive cultural strengths, have made it an important center for educational and cultural exchanges with Maritime Silk Road countries. It entered the national Double First-Class university and discipline development initiative in 2017. In recent comprehensive world rankings such as U.S. News, it ranks 12th among mainland Chinese universities. It has more than 40000 students, including nearly 1500 international degree students, with 19782 undergraduates, 16390 master’s students and 3229 doctoral students. Set around Xiamen Bay between mountains and the sea, its beautiful campus is regarded as one of the world’s most attractive. For nearly a century, with the vision and mission of becoming world-class, it has cultivated outstanding people with all-round moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic development, contributed to national prosperity, rejuvenation and human progress, and earned the reputation of the “Strength of the South” in China and abroad.
