Joint Chinese-Foreign PhD Program

Program

Supports doctoral students registered at overseas universities to study, conduct research and write dissertations in China.

Duration

6 months to 2 years.

Eligibility

• Non-Chinese citizens.
• HSK Level 3. With other conditions equal, higher Chinese proficiency receives priority.
• Current Chinese Government Scholarship recipients may not apply simultaneously.

Documents

• Proof of current doctoral enrollment.
• 2 recommendations from experts in the field.
• HSK score report.
• Master’s thesis abstract or other research achievements.
• Personal statement and research plan for the stay in China.
• A Confucius Institute recommendation gives priority in admission.

Apply online at ccsp.chinese.cn and mail the printed form and other documents to Confucius Institute Headquarters.

The Confucius China Studies Program expert committee reviews documents and conducts interviews.

PhD in China Program

Program

Supports international students pursuing doctoral degrees in China, generally for 3-4 years.

Eligibility

• Non-Chinese citizens.
• HSK Level 5. With other conditions equal, higher Chinese proficiency receives priority.
• Current Chinese Government Scholarship recipients may not apply simultaneously.

Documents

• One notarized copy each of undergraduate and master’s transcripts, degree certificates and Chinese translations.
• 2 recommendations from experts in the field.
• HSK score report.
• Master’s thesis abstract and other research achievements.
• Doctoral research plan.
• A Confucius Institute recommendation gives priority in admission.

Apply online at ccsp.chinese.cn and mail the originals and all other application documents to Confucius Institute Headquarters.

Review

The Confucius China Studies Program expert committee reviews documents and conducts interviews.

Disclaimer

1. Incomplete applications or those not meeting admission requirements are not accepted.
2. False documents or applications not personally completed and submitted lead to disqualification once verified.
3. Recipients unable to report for any reason must notify the receiving institution in writing at least 15 days before the reporting date, stating the reason. Failure to report without explanation cancels the scholarship.
4. To ensure successful completion of study, people with illnesses are advised against enrollment.
