Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban established scholarships supporting international students, scholars and Chinese teachers at Shandong University, developing Confucius Institutes, international Chinese promotion, Chinese culture and qualified teachers and professionals.

I. Categories and Requirements

This year’s categories are one-academic-year and one-semester study. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health, generally aged 16-35; serving Chinese teachers may be up to 45, and undergraduates must be no older than 20.

  1. One-academic-year study: 11 months’ funding, for Confucius Institute/Classroom students, overseas local Chinese teachers, Chinese majors and high-achieving HSK candidates. Current international students in China are ineligible. Required scores: at least HSK Level 3 with 200 and HSKK Elementary with 60, or BCT(A) with 200 and BCT Speaking with 200.
  2. One-semester study: 5 months’ funding, with no previous study in China. Required scores: at least HSK Level 2 with 140 and HSKK Elementary with 50, or BCT(A) with 120 and BCT Speaking with 140.

II. Coverage, Standards and Assessment

Full funding covers tuition, accommodation, living allowance and comprehensive insurance. Tuition supports education, administration, HSK/HSKK tests and cultural activities. Accommodation funding provides free dormitories, generally twin rooms.

The university pays RMB 2500/month to one-year and one-semester students. Student status is registered each semester. Registration on or before the 15th earns a full month; later registration, half. Graduates receive payment through half a month after graduation. Personal absence from China exceeding 15 days outside normal vacations stops allowances for that period. Suspension of study or withdrawal for personal reasons, or violations of university rules, result in suspension of the living allowance. Insurance is purchased centrally under Ministry of Education rules at RMB 800/person/year.

III. Documents

Complete the online scholarship form and attach electronic copies of:

  1. Passport photograph page.
  2. HSK and HSKK reports.
  3. Notarized highest qualification or enrollment evidence.
  4. Recommendation. Chinese majors from countries without Confucius Institutes must also provide a recommendation signed by their university president.
  5. Legal documents entrusting a guardian in China for applicants under 18.
  6. Chinese Bridge university or secondary-school finalists awarded prizes in China need scholarship certificates. Overseas competition winners need award evidence and an organizer’s recommendation.
  7. Other documents required by the university.
