Shenyang Jianzhu University

Shenyang Jianzhu University is jointly supported by provincial and ministerial authorities. It focuses on engineering, with distinctive strengths in architecture, civil engineering and mechanical engineering, and coordinated development across engineering, management, science, literature, agriculture, law and art. Its main campus, in Shenyang’s Hunnan District, covers 1500 mu and has a building floor area of 480000 square meters. Its planning and design embody a people-centered approach and harmonious coexistence with nature. Buildings are modern, simple and concise, with comprehensive facilities. The teaching area consists of a grid of courtyards with an Eastern cultural character, encouraging resource sharing and interdisciplinary exchange. A 756-meter cultural corridor, described as the longest in Asia, skillfully connects the teaching areas, library, laboratories, offices and residential areas, creating a distinctive campus landmark. The university has an open-access library, China’s first architecture museum, a demonstration area for the conservation of ancient Chinese buildings, a Sino-German energy conservation demonstration center, a multifunctional sports center, a tennis training center, and a digital campus information platform. The campus received the national 2008 China Human Settlements and Environment Example Award.

The university has 17 schools and teaching departments and over 1700 faculty and staff, including 581 doctoral and master’s supervisors. It currently has more than 18000 students of all categories, including over 11000 undergraduates, over 2800 doctoral and master’s students, and more than 600 international students.

The university has 2 postdoctoral research stations in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, 5 first-level disciplines authorized to award doctoral degrees, and 29 master’s degree authorization fields, covering 6 disciplinary categories: engineering, management, science, agriculture, law and art. Undergraduate education includes 47 programs in 24 program groups across 7 categories. In the third national assessment of first-level disciplines, 6 first-level disciplines—Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Software Engineering—ranked first among universities administered by Liaoning Province. 5 first-level disciplines—Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Urban and Rural Planning, and Landscape Architecture—were designated first-class distinctive disciplines of Liaoning universities. Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban and Rural Planning, 3 first-level disciplines, were selected as priority disciplines in Liaoning’s first-class discipline initiative. The university was included in Liaoning’s first-class university initiative.

The university has established inter-university exchanges, research partnerships or joint educational relationships with more than 60 universities in over 40 countries and regions, including the University of Miami in the United States, the University of Technology Sydney in Australia, Don State Technical University in Russia and the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom. It is designated by the Ministry of Education to receive domestic visiting scholars, was among the first institutions approved by the State Council to admit international students, admits Chinese Government Scholarship students, and admits recipients of Liaoning Provincial Government Doctoral Scholarships for international students. It is also a Liaoning high-level talent training base and a Liaoning cadre education and training base. Its joint master’s degree program in Information Management with Benedictine University in the United States is a demonstration project of the base. The Sino-Finnish (Nordic) Demonstration Project for Energy-Efficient and Environment-Friendly Timber Villas and the Sino-German Energy Conservation Demonstration Center provide platforms for high-level international scientific and technological cooperation. The university has jointly established a Confucius Institute with Transilvania University in Romania.
