Hainan University

Hainan University is a comprehensive provincial key university established in August 2007 through the merger of South China University of Tropical Agriculture and the former Hainan University. It is jointly supported by the Hainan Provincial People’s Government, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance. It is a key national Project 211 university, a national key university under the One Province, One University initiative for central and western China, and a national Double First-Class discipline development university.

The university has three campuses: Haidian, Chengxi and Danzhou, with Haidian as its main campus. It has comprehensive sports and service facilities, including a gymnasium, athletics field, swimming pool, basketball courts, volleyball courts and tennis courts. It has more than 2570 established faculty and staff, including 1933 full-time teachers, and nearly 38000 students.

Vast blue waters stretch across Hainan’s sea, with green mountains rising beyond mountains. The magnificent openness of the South China Sea has endowed Hainan University with a natural spirit of sea and sky. The university upholds its motto of “Embracing All Rivers, Following the Great Way toward Distant Goals” and its ethos of “Great Virtue and Perseverance, Self-Improvement and Dedication.” It emphasizes the development of spiritual, institutional, behavioral and environmental culture, embraces diverse strengths and continually innovates to cultivate a distinctive, high-quality campus culture. It has educated many high-level professionals for Hainan’s economic and social development. Students come from 30 Chinese provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions and more than 50 countries and regions, creating an atmosphere of exchange and integration among regions, ethnic groups and cultures. Balanced development across 10 disciplinary categories, including literature, law, science, engineering, agriculture and management, creates an educational environment where disciplines intersect, integrate and complement one another. The university places education at its center, prioritizes moral development and emphasizes ability. It works to increase teachers’ social influence and students’ competitiveness, accelerates development through stronger intrinsic quality, offers a short winter term, runs experimental classes in humanities and sciences, and implements Double First-Class study-abroad programs.

“Rooted in Hainan, Oriented toward the Nation and Reaching Southeast Asia,” Hainan University is firmly seizing three major opportunities: the Belt and Road, building China into a maritime power, and developing an international tourism island. It emphasizes four distinctive areas: the tropics, the ocean, tourism and the special economic zone. By 2020, it aims to become a distinctive, high-level Project 211 university with comprehensive strength among the leading institutions of its kind in China, significant influence in China and Southeast Asia, and a place among China’s top one hundred universities.

Hainan University implements an open education strategy and has developed a comprehensive, multilevel and wide-ranging approach to external exchange and cooperation. It has established partnerships with 144 overseas institutions, international research organizations and university alliances from 29 countries and regions. It was selected among the Ministry of Education’s second group of demonstration bases for international student education and has developed a complete international student education system spanning bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
