North China Electric Power University

North China Electric Power University is directly administered by the Ministry of Education and receives priority development under the national “211 Project” and “985 Project Innovation Platform for Advantageous Disciplines.” It is a national “Double First-Class” university for first-class discipline development. Founded in 1958, it is headquartered in Beijing with a campus in Baoding, and the two locations are managed as an integrated whole.

The university has over 30000 full-time students and over 3000 faculty and staff. It has 11 schools and 59 undergraduate programs. It has 2 national key disciplines, “Power Systems and Automation” and “Thermal Power Engineering,” and 25 provincial and ministerial key disciplines. Engineering ranks in the global ESI top 1%. It has 5 postdoctoral research stations; doctoral degree authorizations in 5 first-level and 30 second-level disciplines; and master’s degree authorizations in 23 first-level and 123 second-level disciplines, forming a complete undergraduate, master’s and doctoral education system.

It has an enterprising, high-quality, well-structured faculty. Its personnel include 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 5 jointly appointed academicians, 6 members of the national “Thousand Talents Plan,” 2 of the “Young Thousand Talents Plan,” 2 of the “National Special Support Program for High-Level Talent,” 5 chief scientists of the “973” Program, 1 nationally distinguished teacher, 10 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 Changjiang Scholars, and 8 members of the national “Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project.” A total of 38 people have been selected for the Ministry of Education’s “New Century Excellent Talent Support Program,” and 4 teams for its “Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team Development Program.”

The university regards talent cultivation as its fundamental task and has developed an approach of “strong foundations, practical experience, enhanced abilities and innovation.” It was among the first institutions to implement the Ministry of Education’s “Excellent Engineer Training Program” and passed the ministry’s undergraduate teaching evaluation with an “Excellent” rating. The university actively participates in the national innovation system and has achieved major results in renewable power generation, ultra-high voltage, smart grids, efficient and clean coal-fired generation technology, and nuclear power technology. It has 3 national scientific and technological innovation platforms, 1 national international science and technology cooperation base, 5 university discipline innovation and talent introduction bases, and 27 provincial or ministerial scientific platforms and research bases. It has been selected as a National Demonstration Base for Innovative Talent Training. Since the 10th Five-Year Plan, it has undertaken over 2500 government-sponsored projects under programs including the National Key R&D Program, major national science and technology projects, the “973” and “863” programs, the National Science and Technology Support Program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It has received 275 national, provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards. Research funding has grown rapidly, and it ranks among the leading Ministry of Education-administered universities for papers indexed in the three major international retrieval systems.
