Jilin Agricultural University

The university has over 18000 full-time students of various types, while enrollment in its adult undergraduate and junior-college correspondence programs remains at least 9000. It has 1838 faculty and staff and a well-structured, high-quality and dynamic faculty represented by academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, members of the State Council’s disciplinary appraisal groups, distinguished Changjiang Scholars professors, members of the “Thousand Talents Plan” and “Ten Thousand Talents Plan,” nationally recognized young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions, members of the national “Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project,” and nationally outstanding teachers.

The university covers nearly 1400 hectares, including a campus area of 319.02 hectares, with 802000 square meters of buildings. Its fixed assets exceed RMB 2.2 billion, and its library holds 2.4668 million volumes.

It has a graduate school, 15 schools and 2 directly affiliated teaching departments. It has 7 postdoctoral research stations, 21 disciplines authorized to award doctoral degrees, 79 authorized to award master’s degrees, 1 national key discipline under cultivation and 13 provincial or ministerial key disciplines. Its 59 undergraduate programs include 7 national distinctive programs, 13 provincial distinctive programs and 9 provincial branded programs. It has 1 national research platform, 9 national ministry-level research platforms, 47 provincial or municipal research platforms, 1 international cooperation platform, 3 university-enterprise jointly developed platforms, and 373 practical teaching bases of various kinds on and off campus.

Drawing on strong disciplines and teaching and research resources, the university follows the philosophy of “taking responsibility for serving local economic development and social progress” and promotes its motto, “Cultivate Virtue and Wisdom, Be Sincere and Act Diligently.” With quality-focused development as its theme, it continually optimizes its disciplinary and program structure and advances teaching reform centered on improving educational quality and students’ overall abilities. It explores and operates distinctive, diversified talent training models, principally the excellent talent model, the “three levels, three combinations and five platforms” model and the “foundation + distinctiveness” model. It works to develop applied, versatile and research-oriented talent with solid foundations, broad perspectives, strong overall capabilities and innovative ability.

Following the principle that science and technology should serve local economic development, the university has developed an approach to science and education services described as “writing research papers on the land of Jilin.” Since the start of the 12th Five-Year Plan, it has undertaken 1944 research projects of various types and levels, with research funding reaching RMB 709 million. It has won 129 national, provincial or ministerial science and technology awards, setting a new record for the number received. For several consecutive years, it has ranked first among provincially administered universities in both the quantity and quality of provincial science and technology awards. It has developed a scientific and technological service system represented by the “Antu Model” of university-local government cooperation, the “Minle Model” of university-village cooperation, the “Borui Model” of university-enterprise cooperation and the “Zambia Model” of international cooperation. It has provided over 2 million training instances for technical personnel and farmers and generated over RMB 15 billion in additional income through technology.

The university implements an open education strategy and continually broadens its educational reach. It has established institutional exchanges and partnerships with 58 universities, research institutes and related institutions in countries including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, South Africa and Zambia. It actively draws on and introduces overseas intellectual resources, sending young and middle-aged core teachers and students abroad for visiting study, degree study and international research collaboration. It has received approval for one Sino-foreign cooperative education program. It actively develops international student education and hosts recipients of the Chinese Government Scholarship, China-Europe Credit Student Scholarship and Jilin Provincial Government Scholarship. It also conducts foreign-aid training and was the first provincially administered university to undertake national foreign-aid training projects. During the 12th Five-Year Plan, it provided specialized training for 393 agricultural and livestock officials and technical personnel from 71 developing countries. The China-aided Agricultural Technology Demonstration Center in Zambia, built by the university on behalf of the Chinese government as one of the first such centers in Africa, has become a model of “South-South Cooperation” and attracted widespread public attention.
