I. University overview

Jiangxi Normal University is located in Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province. It is jointly developed by the Ministry of Education and Jiangxi Provincial People’s Government and participates in the Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China. It brings together ten disciplinary categories: literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, science, engineering, education and arts. It has considerable influence on Jiangxi’s political, economic, cultural and social development and has been designated by the provincial government as a provincially administered key normal university for priority development.

It has 22 specialized schools and 1 independent college, the College of Science and Technology. Its two campuses, Yaohu and Qingshanhu, cover over 3500 mu. Its library holds over 3.04 million printed documents and over 3.3 million e-books.

II. History

Origins: Bailudong Academy on Mount Lushan

1940: National Chung Cheng University established

1949: Renamed National Nanchang University

1953: Reorganized as Jiangxi Teachers College

1983: Renamed Jiangxi Normal University

2003: Jiangxi Finance Staff University (Jiangxi Banking School) incorporated

IV. Discipline development

The university has 5 postdoctoral research stations or workstations, 9 first-level doctoral degree authorizations, 63 second-level doctoral degree authorizations, 30 first-level master’s degree authorizations, 16 professional master’s degree authorizations and 87 undergraduate programs. Chemistry ranks in the global ESI top 1%.

V. Students

The university has over 30000 full-time undergraduates, over 5000 doctoral and master’s students, over 10000 adult higher degree education students and over 400 international students.

VI. Faculty

It has over 2600 established faculty and staff positions, including over 1700 full-time teachers and over 700 doctorate holders. Among full-time teachers, 22.16% are aged 35 or younger, 53.73% hold senior professional titles and 84.67% hold a master’s degree or higher.

VII. Research

The university has 1 national engineering technology research center, 1 joint national-local engineering laboratory, 1 National University Science Park, 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 Ministry of Education key laboratories, 1 Ministry of Education country and regional studies center, 1 national university counselor development research center, 2 international science and technology cooperation bases, 1 General Administration of Sport key laboratory, 1 national science and technology service platform and over 50 provincial research or technology centers and bases. Over the past 4 years, the number of approved National Social Science Fund and National Natural Science Foundation projects has ranked among the top 10 normal universities nationwide. It ranked 71st among Chinese universities in the 2017 global Nature Index published by the British journal Nature in February 2017. It publishes 5 journals, including 3 national Chinese core journals and 2 CSSCI source journals.

VIII. Alumni

In over 70 years, the university has trained nearly 300000 outstanding people in various fields, many of whom have become key professionals in their industries. Its graduates account for nearly half of Jiangxi’s primary and secondary school special-grade teachers, at least 60% of its provincial backbone primary and secondary school teachers, and at least 80% of its senior high school special-grade teachers and subject leaders. Its alumni also include many outstanding professionals, entrepreneurs and political figures. In the Alumni Association website’s 2016 Chinese university rankings, it ranked 78th nationally for outstanding political alumni and 83rd for wealth creation. It ranked 126th in the 2017 Chinese university rankings.

IX. International cooperation

The university has friendly partnerships with over 60 universities and institutions in more than 20 countries and regions. It operates credit recognition and teacher and student exchange programs with 28 universities and has jointly developed key laboratories with over 10 research teams and institutions in China and overseas. It hosts two Confucius Institutes, including the Confucius Institute at the University of Antananarivo in Madagascar, which has been awarded “Model Confucius Institute” status. It employs over 30 foreign teachers on an ongoing basis. It hosts recipients of the Chinese Government Scholarship, Confucius Institute Scholarship and Jiangxi Provincial Government Scholarship and offers its own international student scholarships. Each year, over 400 international students from more than 40 countries study at the university.
