Changsha University of Science and Technology

Changsha University of Science and Technology is a multidisciplinary university with an emphasis on engineering and coordinated development across engineering, science, management, economics, literature, law, philosophy and the arts. Undergraduate education is its main focus, and it has postdoctoral research stations, authority to award doctoral degrees, and the right to recommend students for admission to master’s programs without an entrance examination. Over more than 60 years of development, it has built a university culture centered on its motto, “Extensive Learning, Earnest Practice, Upholding Integrity and Breaking New Ground,” and its “paving-stone spirit” of dedicated service. Since its founding, it has trained more than 400000 advanced professionals for transport, electric power, water resources, light industry, and regional economic and social development. Its graduate employment rate has remained at least 95% for many consecutive years.

The university participates in the national Project for Basic Capacity Building of Universities in Central and Western China. It has two campuses, Jinpenling and Yuntang, occupying 2980 mu, with more than 1.2 million square meters of buildings and fixed assets totaling RMB 3.952 billion. Its library holds 3.36 million printed volumes and 792600 electronic books, subscribes to 1344 Chinese and foreign periodicals, and hosts a Ministry of Education science and technology novelty search station and a Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering power science and technology novelty search station. The university has 19 teaching schools, 1 independent college and 1 school of continuing education. It has more than 38000 full-time students, including over 5000 doctoral and master’s students.

The university follows a development strategy of strengthening the institution through talent. It has 1924 full-time teachers, including 310 with full senior professional titles and 650 with associate senior titles. Its faculty includes 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 jointly appointed academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 chief scientist of a Project 973 program, 3 Changjiang Scholars distinguished professors, 3 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 participants in the national High-End Foreign Experts Program in education and culture, 20 experts receiving special government allowances from the State Council, 3 national distinguished teachers, 2 National Outstanding Teachers, 1 national model of teachers’ ethics, and 1 Young Changjiang Scholar. It also has 2 Hunan leading talents in science and technology, 1 team under Hunan’s Hundred Talents Team Program, and 13 participants in Hunan’s Hundred Talents Program.

The university has 11 provincial key disciplines under the 12th Five-Year Plan, and engineering ranks in the top 1% worldwide in ESI. It has 3 postdoctoral research stations; authorization to award doctoral degrees in 6 first-level and 28 second-level disciplines; authorization to award master’s degrees in 24 first-level and 121 second-level disciplines; and 10 professional master’s degree categories. It is also authorized to award master’s degrees to applicants with equivalent academic qualifications. It has 2 national research platforms, 2 Ministry of Education innovation teams, 7 provincial innovation teams, 43 natural science innovation platforms including provincial and ministerial key laboratories and engineering or technology research centers, and 6 provincial philosophy and social science research bases.

The university pursues openness and extensive international exchange and cooperation. It has established exchange and cooperation relationships with more than 70 universities and research institutions in over 20 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, Russia, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It is qualified to recruit and educate international students and is a host institution for Chinese Government Scholarship students. More than 300 international students currently study at the university. It has jointly established Confucius Institutes with the University of Montenegro and the University of Liberia. In recent years, more than 1000 enrolled students have been sent abroad or to other regions for exchange study.
