Fuzhou University

Fuzhou University is a key university under the national Project 211, a university selected for national first-class discipline development, and a university jointly supported by the People’s Government of Fujian Province and the Ministry of Education. Founded in 1958, it has developed into a key university emphasizing engineering, integrating science and engineering, and coordinating the development of science, engineering, economics, management, literature, law, the arts and other disciplines.

The university has several campuses, including Qishan, Yishan and Tongpan in Fuzhou; Jimei and Gulangyu in Xiamen; and Quangang and Jinjiang in Quanzhou, covering more than 7000 mu. Its main operations are at the Qishan campus in Fuzhou University Town. It has more than 1.23 million square meters of public-use buildings and over 140000 square meters of sports grounds. Fixed assets total more than RMB 3.3 billion, including over RMB 1 billion in teaching and research equipment. The library holds over 3.22 million printed volumes and 2.27 million electronic books. Its network center hosts the Fuzhou main node of the China Education and Research Network.

The university has 19 schools primarily educating full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as 1 independent college. It has 1 national key discipline, 1 national key discipline under cultivation, 5 provincial innovation platforms for advantageous disciplines, 6 provincial distinctive key disciplines, and 26 provincial key disciplines. Three disciplines—chemistry, engineering and materials science—rank in the top 1% in the international ESI rankings. Its overall ranking for ESI top-1% disciplines is 49th among mainland Chinese universities. It has 11 postdoctoral research stations, doctoral degree authorization in 10 first-level disciplines and 3 second-level disciplines not covered by first-level authorization, master’s degree authorization in 36 first-level disciplines and 7 second-level disciplines not covered by first-level authorization, and 12 professional degree authorizations, including 23 engineering fields within the Master of Engineering authorization. It offers 78 undergraduate programs. In the internationally recognized Times world university academic ranking table, it ranks 671st worldwide and around 40th among mainland Chinese universities.

The university has 3170 faculty and staff, including 1996 full-time teachers. Its faculty includes 6 academicians, of whom 5 are jointly appointed; 1 academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences; 1 academician of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences; 1 National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talent; 1 chief scientist of a Project 973 program; 12 participants in various national Thousand Talents programs; 4 participants in national Ten Thousand Talents programs; 5 Changjiang Scholars distinguished professors; 1 national distinguished teacher; 8 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars; 8 national participants in the Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project; 5 nationally recognized young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions; 2 recipients of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars; 13 participants in the Ministry of Education’s Program for New Century Excellent Talents; 116 experts receiving special government allowances from the State Council; and more than 272 doctoral supervisors. One team was selected as a National Advanced Collective of Professional and Technical Talent; 2 were selected for the Ministry of Education’s Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team Development Program; and 1 was selected as an innovation team in a key field under the Ministry of Science and Technology’s Innovative Talent Promotion Program. The university was selected for the national program promoting demonstration schools for university internationalization and the Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Overseas Expertise Introduction Program, known as Plan 111.

The university is approved by the Ministry of Education to recruit undergraduate and postgraduate students from abroad and from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It currently has more than 24000 regular first-batch undergraduate students and over 10300 doctoral and master’s students of various types. Since its founding, it has trained more than 210000 full-time doctoral and master’s graduates and undergraduate and junior college graduates for the country.

The university actively develops external cooperation and exchanges. It has established strong institutional partnerships with renowned universities and research institutes including Tsinghua University, Peking University and Renmin University of China, and partnerships with more than 140 universities in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Italy, Canada and Australia, and in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It actively promotes international exchanges in science, education and culture. Each year, nearly 150 overseas experts hold medium- or long-term appointments at the university. It also established China’s first center for Western literature and classics, the Xiguan Library. The university currently has 3 Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs and more than 40 long- and short-term visiting study programs, covering undergraduate, master’s and doctoral education. These include what is currently the only doctoral-level cooperative education program between a mainland university and Taiwan. It is also currently the only university in Fujian Province whose Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs cover both undergraduate and postgraduate study.
