Dongbei University of Finance and Economics

Dongbei University of Finance and Economics was founded in 1952 and is located west of Xinghai Park, a national scenic area in Dalian. It is a multidisciplinary teaching and research university specializing in economics and management. It offers 5 disciplinary categories—economics, management, law, literature and science—through full-time and part-time regular education. Among its disciplines, industrial economics, public finance including taxation, and accounting are national key disciplines; quantitative economics is a national key discipline under cultivation; and theoretical economics, applied economics, management science and engineering, and business administration are provincial first-level key disciplines. Public administration and social security are provincial second-level key disciplines. Nine programs—accounting, finance, business administration, public finance, statistics, taxation, insurance, engineering management and tourism management—are national distinctive programs.

The university places great importance on research and its role in advancing teaching. It has 1 Ministry of Education key humanities and social sciences research base, 9 Liaoning key humanities and social sciences research bases, 7 other provincial key research institutions, and 41 university-level research institutes, centers and organizations of various types. For many years, it has held at least one renowned scholar forum, doctoral supervisor forum, professor forum or doctoral forum each week, inviting prominent scholars from China and abroad and its own doctoral supervisors, noted professors and doctorate holders to deliver specialist academic lectures. The university proposed and launched international cooperative education as early as 1994, gradually developing an approach based on “high standards and internationalization.” Through more than a decade of exploration and practice, it systematically introduced advanced overseas university teaching and management models and made full use of teaching resources within and outside the university and in China and abroad. It has progressively internationalized its teaching languages, selection of textbooks, curricula, student intake, teaching resources and teaching management methods. It currently has various forms of friendly cooperation with 82 universities in 18 countries and regions.

International student education at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics has a history of nearly 30 years, during which it has educated several thousand students from more than 100 countries. It has developed a relatively systematic education and management framework encompassing undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees, as well as non-degree long- and short-term Chinese and business Chinese study. It is a test center for the Business Chinese Test (BCT) and Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), and one of the host institutions for Chinese Government Scholarship international students. In 2012, with the highest overall score, it was selected as one of Liaoning’s first demonstration bases for international education in China.

The university follows a student-centered educational philosophy, draws on its advantages in finance and economics, and emphasizes its distinctive business Chinese teaching. Its consistent goal is to develop versatile international professionals who understand both Chinese and economics. The School of International Education is the educational and administrative unit dedicated to receiving international students. Guided by the principle of “sustaining through distinctive strengths and developing through innovation,” it provides high-quality teaching and living conditions. It also offers dedicated undergraduate classes for international students in Chinese language and in economics and management programs. The university’s total long- and short-term international student enrollment exceeds 1100, including nearly 700 long-term international students, 75% of whom pursue bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees.

Through 60 years of exploration and practice since its founding, Dongbei University of Finance and Economics has consistently upheld sound educational principles. Its educational conditions, disciplinary structure, faculty, management standards, teaching and research achievements, overall strength, and reputation in China and abroad have continued to improve.
