Liaoning Petrochemical University

Liaoning Petrochemical University was the first petroleum industry school established in the People’s Republic of China. Founded in Dalian in 1950, it moved to Fushun in 1953 and was upgraded to Fushun Petroleum Institute in 1958. In February 2000, administration was transferred from China Petrochemical Corporation to the Liaoning Provincial People’s Government. In February 2002, it was renamed Liaoning Petrochemical University with Ministry of Education approval. In March 2010, the Liaoning Provincial People’s Government, PetroChina, Sinopec and CNOOC signed a four-party agreement to jointly support the university.

Over 71 years since its establishment, it has developed into a multidisciplinary institution distinguished by petroleum and petrochemicals, with coordinated development across eight categories: engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, education and art. In 2007, it received an Excellent rating in the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching evaluation. It is designated by the Ministry of Education as a basic training base for high-level ethnic minority talent and a training base for ethnic minority undergraduate preparatory students, and is a Liaoning training base for urgently needed undergraduate talent in petrochemicals. It has trained more than 130000 graduates, most of whom have become key managerial and technical professionals in China’s petroleum and petrochemical industries.

It pursues development centered on improving quality and has established talent training as its central task. It continually optimizes its disciplines, programs and faculty, significantly improves its educational conditions, and strengthens its educational standards and overall capabilities. It covers 1890 mu, with a total building floor area of 840000 square meters. Its library holds 2.519 million volumes and provides 46 electronic literature databases. It has 20 schools and more than 18000 full-time students. It is a Liaoning first-class discipline development university in Category A. It has 2 jointly offered doctoral degree fields, 14 first-level master’s degree fields, 47 second-level master’s degree fields, and 10 professional master’s degree categories: Materials and Chemical Engineering, Resources and Environment, Energy and Power, Electronic Information, Mechanical Engineering, Business Administration (MBA), Public Administration (MPA), Accounting (MPAcc), Translation and Interpreting (MTI), and Fine Arts (MFA). Engineering ranks in the ESI global top 1%. In the Ministry of Education’s fourth discipline assessment, five disciplines placed in the top 70%, with Chemical Engineering and Technology and Control Science and Engineering ranking first among universities administered by Liaoning Province.

It has 58 undergraduate programs. It has approval for 9 national first-class undergraduate program development sites, 4 nationally distinctive programs, 6 pilot programs under the Ministry of Education Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program (including 1 master’s field), and 1 pilot program for comprehensive reform. 5 programs have passed Chinese engineering education accreditation. It has 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 2 national engineering practice education centers, and 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching projects. At provincial level, it has 22 first-class undergraduate program development sites, 1 advantageous and distinctive program, 5 pilot programs for innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, 11 pilot programs for transition toward applied education, 5 demonstration programs for that transition, 2 pilot programs for comprehensive reform, 7 pilot programs for engineering talent training model reform, 2 priority-supported programs, 5 demonstration programs and 2 distinctive programs. It has approval for 29 provincial experimental teaching, practice and training centers and bases, 9 shared-resource courses, 2 open video courses and 2 bilingual teaching demonstration courses. Since 2013, it has received 42 teaching achievement awards at provincial level or above and approval for 8 provincial outstanding textbooks. Student innovation and entrepreneurship activities are extensive. Over the past three years, students have won 702 national and 1439 provincial or ministerial awards in subject competitions and scientific and technological innovation activities. The Communist Youth League Central Committee designated it a university student KAB entrepreneurship education base and a KAB Entrepreneurship Club university.

The School of International Education was established in 2009. It has educated 2550 international students from more than 80 countries and over 500 students in Sino-foreign joint education programs. Dedicated to promoting international cultural and educational exchange and cooperation, it provides an important platform for interaction between Chinese and international students. Liaoning Petrochemical University became qualified to admit Chinese Government Scholarship students in 2012 and Silk Road Chinese Government Scholarship students in 2017.

The school’s main offices include its administrative office, international admissions office, student affairs office and academic affairs office. It has comprehensive facilities, advanced management systems and strong faculty. Integrated university-wide operation also allows it to use all university resources and draw on disciplinary strengths for teaching and research. With teaching at its center, talent training as its goal and distinctive education as its approach, it builds on existing strengths, continually improves teaching quality, and strives to provide high-level international student education that meets diverse needs. English-taught undergraduate and postgraduate programs available to international students include Petroleum Engineering, Civil Engineering, Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Mining Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, and Business Administration.
