Tsinghua University’s predecessor, Tsing Hua Imperial College, was founded in 1911 and renamed Tsing Hua College in 1912. It became National Tsinghua University in 1928. After the full-scale outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in 1937, it moved south to Changsha and joined Peking University and Nankai University to establish National Changsha Temporary University. In 1938, it moved to Kunming and was renamed National Southwest Associated University. It returned to Tsinghua Garden in 1946 with 5 schools in humanities, law, science, engineering and agriculture, and 26 departments.
Following the nationwide restructuring of university departments in 1952, Tsinghua became a multidisciplinary university of technology focused on training engineering and technical professionals for the nation, earning the name “the cradle of red engineers.” Since reform and opening-up, it has gradually established the long-term goal of becoming a world-class university and entered a new period of vigorous development. It restored or established disciplines in science, economics, management and the humanities and established a graduate school and a school of continuing education. In 1999, it merged with the Central Academy of Arts and Design to form the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University. In 2012, the former graduate school of the People’s Bank of China was incorporated as the PBC School of Finance, Tsinghua University. With strong national and public support and through Projects 211 and 985 and the Double First-Class initiative, Tsinghua has made significant progress in talent training, research, social services, cultural inheritance and innovation, and international exchange and cooperation. It currently has 20 schools and 58 departments and has become a comprehensive research university covering 11 categories: science, engineering, literature, art, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, education and medicine.
Looking ahead, Tsinghua will continue to uphold its motto of “Self-Discipline and Social Commitment” and its ethos of “Actions Speak Louder than Words.” It maintains an educational approach integrating China and the West, connecting ancient and modern knowledge, and bringing the humanities and sciences together, and emphasizes developing people who are both politically committed and professionally competent with all-round capabilities. It promotes its tradition of patriotism, dedication and pursuit of excellence and its spirit of continual cultural renewal. It thoroughly implements the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s congratulatory letter for the university’s 105th anniversary, maintains the correct direction, fosters virtue and educates people, serves the nation, and pursues reform and innovation. With a global outlook, initiative, confidence and distinctive strengths, it will educate the diverse talent needed by the country and its people, participate deeply in the innovation-driven development strategy, strive to lead in building a world-class university, and make new and greater contributions to national development, people’s happiness and the progress of human civilization.
