Shanghai Normal University

Shanghai Normal University is a key university of Shanghai. Among the city’s local universities, it is a comprehensive institution with strengths in the humanities, distinctive teacher education and coordinated development in humanities, sciences and engineering.

Talent training The university has more than 21,000 full-time undergraduate and junior college students, over 7000 postgraduate students and more than 13000 evening university students. Over 2300 international students and visiting scholars study here each year. It is a host institution for Chinese Government Scholarship and Confucius Institute Scholarship students. Over more than 60 years, it has trained over 130000 people at different levels and in various fields. Nearly 70% of Shanghai’s primary and secondary school teachers and nearly 70% of its secondary school principals are graduates.

Disciplines and programs It has 86 undergraduate programs covering 11 categories, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management and agriculture. It has 6 first-level and 46 second-level doctoral degree authorization fields, 9 postdoctoral research stations, 188 master’s degree authorization fields and 13 professional master’s degree fields. Over several decades, it has developed a group of strong and distinctive disciplines. Comparative Literature and World Literature is a national key discipline. Its Center for Urban Cultural Studies is the only Ministry of Education key research base in the humanities and social sciences at a Shanghai local university. Its Resource Chemistry Laboratory is a Ministry of Education key laboratory jointly supported by province and ministry. It hosts three Shanghai university E-Institutes in Urban Culture, Computational Science and Comparative Linguistics. It also has 14 Shanghai key disciplines, 16 Shanghai Municipal Education Commission key disciplines, 5 Shanghai university key research bases in the humanities and social sciences, 2 Shanghai key laboratories, and 2 Shanghai Municipal Education Commission key laboratories.

Faculty It has a well-structured faculty including experts, scholars and outstanding young academics with influence in China and abroad. It has 2,915 faculty and staff, including 1,831 full-time teachers. Among full-time teachers, 300 hold full senior professional and technical titles and 667 hold associate senior titles. 1,596 hold doctoral or master’s degrees, accounting for 86.1% of full-time teachers, including 948 doctorate holders. It also has approximately 500 part-time teachers.

Facilities Its two main campuses, Xuhui and Fengxian, cover more than 1.55 million square meters. Its building floor area exceeds 770000 square meters, including 93000 square meters of classrooms, 299000 square meters of student accommodation, and 72000 square meters of campus laboratories and practical training facilities. Its two central libraries hold more than approximately 3.5 million books, provide around one hundred-plus electronic book databases and 8 databases featuring distinctive collections. The Shanghai University Ceramics Museum on campus is one of Shanghai’s ten university museums of ethnic culture. With at least 180000 ancient books and over 1350 rare ancient book titles, it was recognized as a National Key Institution for the Protection of Ancient Books following review by a State Council expert panel. Total fixed assets are approximately RMB 2.403 billion, including RMB 644 million in teaching and research equipment.
