Henan Province, in China’s Central Plains, is a cradle of Chinese civilization. Three of China’s seven ancient capitals—Luoyang, Kaifeng and Anyang—are in Henan. It ranks first in China for underground cultural relics, and its museum collections account for approximately one-eighth of the national total. It has three World Cultural Heritage sites: the Yin Ruins in Anyang, where oracle bone inscriptions were unearthed; Shaolin Temple on Mount Song, a birthplace of Chinese martial arts; and the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, one of China’s great collections of stone carving art. It is also where the Hetu and Luoshu texts were formed.
Henan is a principal birthplace of traditional Chinese medicine and the home of Zhang Zhongjing, revered as the sage of Chinese medicine. Three classic works, The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic, Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases, and Shennong’s Classic of Materia Medica, were largely completed here. Henan produces more than 2780 kinds of Chinese medicinal materials, ranking third nationally in both variety and output. It is also the birthplace of Chen-style tai chi.
Henan University of Chinese Medicine is in Zhengzhou, Henan. Founded in 1958, it is one of China’s earlier traditional Chinese medicine higher education institutions, jointly supported by the Henan Provincial People’s Government and National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is included in the national Central and Western Higher Education Revitalization Plan and is a Ministry of Education host institution for Chinese Government Scholarship students. It is Henan’s leading center for traditional Chinese medicine talent training, technological innovation, clinical and social services, and cultural inheritance. Over more than 50 years, it has developed from a single-field traditional Chinese medicine institution into a comprehensive university of Chinese medicine coordinating medicine, science, management, engineering, literature and other disciplines. It provides undergraduate, doctoral and master’s, international student and continuing education. It has 4 campuses covering 1594.94 mu, more than 19000 students and 17 schools, departments and centers. It offers 24 undergraduate programs, including Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture and Tuina, Clinical Medicine Integrating Chinese and Western Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Nursing, Rehabilitation Therapy, and Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, along with 57 master’s and 14 doctoral programs, centered on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Traditional Chinese Pharmacy. It has 3 directly affiliated hospitals, 8 non-directly affiliated hospitals and 129 teaching and internship bases, with 35 national key specialties or disease specialties and 23 provincial key specialties. Its library holds 1.599 million books, with a particularly rich collection of thread-bound ancient traditional Chinese medicine works, ranking among the largest collections at China’s traditional Chinese medicine institutions. It conducts extensive cooperation and exchange in talent training, research, medical services and product development with nearly 50 universities, research and medical institutions, enterprises and other organizations worldwide.
Its international student education began in 1993, and it was among the first higher education institutions approved by China’s Ministry of Education to admit international students. Its degree education for international students includes junior-college-to-bachelor’s, undergraduate, master’s and doctoral study in fields such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, and Acupuncture and Tuina. It also offers short-term study and Chinese language training. Integrated study combining traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, health preservation, martial arts and Chan meditation is a distinctive feature of its international student education. The School of International Education handles international admissions and teaching. In both 2009 and 2014, it was named a National Advanced Collective in International Student Education Administration by the China Association of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education. In 2013, it was the only traditional Chinese medicine institution to advance to the national finals of “Sports and Culture Tour of Sunshine for International Students in China,” organized by the Ministry of Education’s Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges. In September 2013, it was approved to undertake the education of Chinese Government Scholarship students.
