Hohai University

Hohai University is a national key university directly administered by the Ministry of Education, with a century-long history, a distinctive focus on water resources, an engineering emphasis and coordinated multidisciplinary development. It has a graduate school and participates in national “211 Project” priority development, the Innovation Platform for Advantageous Disciplines initiative and first-class discipline development. Over a hundred years, it has grown through efforts to manage water and strengthen the nation, becoming known as “a cradle for high-level innovative and entrepreneurial water resources professionals and a key base for innovation in water science and technology.” It has Xikang Road, Jiangning and Changzhou campuses in Nanjing and Changzhou, covering 2579 mu. At the end of September 2017, it had 51419 students in degree education, including 16493 postgraduate students, 19870 regular undergraduates, 13874 adult education students and 1182 international students.

Hohai University was among the first Chinese universities authorized to award bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Water resources engineering ranked first in the Ministry of Education’s 2012 discipline evaluation. Engineering, environment/ecology and computer science rank in the global ESI top 1%. It has 1 national key first-level discipline, water resources engineering; 7 national key second-level disciplines; 2 national key second-level disciplines under cultivation; 15 provincial key first-level disciplines; and 73 provincial key second-level disciplines. It has 15 postdoctoral research stations; 12 first-level and 66 second-level doctoral degree authorizations; 35 first-level and 198 second-level master’s degree authorizations; 11 professional master’s degree categories, with the Master of Engineering covering 19 engineering fields; and 54 undergraduate programs.

Drawing on its multidisciplinary strengths, the university addresses key technological issues in major national engineering projects, strengthens its distinctive research and integrated innovation abilities, advances collaborative innovation and serves national economic and social development. It has the State Key Laboratory of Hydrology-Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering and the National Engineering Research Center for Efficient Water Resources Utilization and Engineering Safety, 6 national, provincial or ministerial key laboratories, 13 national, provincial or ministerial engineering research centers and 5 university discipline innovation and talent introduction bases. Closely involved with major projects such as the Three Gorges Dam, Xiaolangdi on the Yellow River, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project and hydropower development in western China, it has undertaken numerous key and major national research programs and engineering research projects. Since 2000, it has received 40 national and 676 ministerial or provincial scientific achievement awards. Addressing strategic needs in national water security and regional economic and social development, it actively nurtures a national collaborative innovation center for water security and water science and has initiated 4 Jiangsu university collaborative innovation centers.

Hohai University implements an international development strategy and conducts extensive international exchanges and cooperation. It was among the first Chinese universities authorized to award doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees to international students. It has trained over one thousand doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s graduates for more than 100 countries and regions and has institutional partnerships with 57 universities and research institutions in 20 countries and regions. It actively engages with the national Belt and Road strategy, expands overseas educational sites and promotes local talent cultivation. Serving enterprises’ internationalization strategies, it strengthens customized training and provides scientific, technological and talent support for Belt and Road countries and Chinese engineering companies operating overseas.
