Sichuan International Studies University

The university has 1 first-level academic doctoral discipline, foreign languages and literature, covering 13 second-level doctoral authorizations. It has 3 first-level academic master’s disciplines—foreign languages and literature, Chinese language and literature, and Marxist theory—and 31 second-level academic master’s authorizations. It has 4 professional master’s degree categories—translation and interpreting, Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, international business, and journalism and communication—covering 21 professional master’s fields. In addition to full-time master’s degrees, its academic master’s authorizations also allow degrees to be awarded to applicants with equivalent academic qualifications.

Following a strategy of “putting people first and strengthening the university through talent,” it focuses on training, recruitment and effective deployment and comprehensively implements faculty development. It has over 1100 faculty and staff and over 680 teaching staff. Professors and associate professors account for approximately 42% of teaching staff, doctorate holders approximately 23%, and teachers with at least a master’s degree 81%. Over 80 experts have received provincial or ministerial honors or titles or higher. They include 5 experts receiving State Council special government allowances, 3 National Outstanding Teachers, 3 Chongqing distinguished teachers, 4 Chongqing outstanding teachers, 1 member of Chongqing’s first group of young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions, 4 members of the Ministry of Education’s foreign-language program committee, 6 Chongqing academic and technical leaders, 1 Chongqing role model in teaching and education, 11 members of Chongqing’s senior-title appraisal committee for foreign-language disciplines and 13 members of its senior-title appraisal committee for the translation profession.

The university has comprehensive, advanced teaching facilities, including the most complete foreign-language multimedia classrooms, language laboratories, simultaneous interpreting laboratories and translation laboratories in southwestern China. Its library holds over 1.6 million books, including original-language foreign literature and language reference works, and nearly 3000 Chinese and foreign-language periodicals.

It has institutional exchange relationships with over eighty universities across five continents and extensive cooperation and exchanges in faculty training and undergraduate and postgraduate education. It is the only full member among Chinese members of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF). With overseas governments and educational institutions, it has established international educational and cultural exchange bodies including Alliance Française, a Goethe-Institut language center, a Russian language center, an Instituto Cervantes language center and the China office of the University of Toulouse consortium. It jointly operates Confucius Institutes with the University of Lomé in Togo, Nizhny Novgorod Linguistics University in Russia and the University of West Florida in the United States. It has established an undergraduate dual-qualification program in business English with the University of Newcastle in Australia.
