China University of Mining and Technology

Founded in 1909, China University of Mining and Technology has developed over more than a century into a national key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education and a participating university in the national Project 211 and Project 985 Innovation Platforms for Advantageous Disciplines. In 2017, it was designated a national first-class discipline development university. Its campuses cover 4413 mu, comprising 1555 mu at Wenchang and 2858 mu at Nanhu, with more than 1.3 million square meters of buildings.

The university has 25 schools, 72 undergraduate programs, master’s degrees in 35 first-level disciplines, 20 professional degree authorizations, doctoral degrees in 21 first-level disciplines and 5 professional doctoral categories. It has 1 national first-level key discipline, 8 national key disciplines and 1 national key discipline under cultivation. Engineering education and research are particular strengths. In the Ministry of Education’s fourth discipline evaluation in 2017, mining engineering, safety science and engineering, surveying and mapping science and technology, and geological resources and geological engineering ranked first, first, third and third respectively. Engineering, geosciences, materials science and chemistry rank among the top 1% of universities and research institutions worldwide in ESI. The university is also strong in business, science and the humanities.

The university has developed a comprehensive set of high-level science and technology innovation platforms. It has 6 national key laboratories, 1 national engineering research center, 1 national engineering technology research center, 1 national-local joint engineering laboratory, 4 Ministry of Education key laboratories, 4 Ministry of Education engineering research centers, 1 Ministry of Education joint international cooperation laboratory, 1 Ministry of Education field scientific observation and research station, and 58 other provincial or ministerial research platforms. It has established a Shenzhen Research Institute, an Institute for Strategic Development of Energy and Resources, a Western Energy Research Institute and a Guizhou Research Institute in Shenzhen, Beijing, Xinjiang and Guizhou respectively. On campus, it has established directly administered interdisciplinary research institutions such as the Institute of Carbon Neutrality and the Internet of Things (Mine Sensing) Research Center. With Xuzhou’s local government and enterprises, it has jointly developed 6 external cooperative research platforms, including the Yunlong Lake Laboratory of Deep Earth Science and Engineering, the Xuzhou Institute for Sustainable Development, and the CUMT-XCMG Institute of Intelligent Mining Equipment Technology. Together with the National Innovation Center par Excellence in the Yangtze River Delta, it has established the Jicui School for joint postgraduate education. It has also received approval to establish a National School of Excellence in Engineering.

The university has a high-level workforce of more than 3780 faculty and staff. Its 2278 full-time teachers include 544 with full senior and 1067 with associate senior professional titles, 812 doctoral supervisors and 1737 master’s supervisors. Teachers with doctorates account for 84.15%.

The university is in Xuzhou, a city with a long history and a temperate monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. At the northern end of Jiangsu Province, between Beijing and Shanghai, Xuzhou enjoys an advantageous location as a national integrated transport hub. Fuxing high-speed trains connect Xuzhou to the five major cities of Beijing, Xi’an, Wuhan, Shanghai and Hangzhou in 3 hours.
