Founded in 1958 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the University of Science and Technology of China is a comprehensive research university focused on frontier science and advanced technology, with medicine, distinctive management disciplines and the humanities. In 1978, it pioneered China’s first graduate school and became known as a “cradle of scientific elites.” Supported by world-class laboratories and large scientific facilities, USTC has become an important center of innovation and research in China.
The university has 34 schools, as well as the Suzhou Institute for Advanced Research, Shanghai Institute, Beijing Institute, Institute of Advanced Technology and the First Affiliated Hospital of USTC.

The university has 3,212 teaching and research personnel, including 1,181 professors and 1,149 associate professors, in both cases including equivalent professional and technical appointments. A total of 779 high-level talents, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, are counted without duplication and account for 45.3% of permanent faculty. It has 8,185 undergraduates, 34,481 postgraduate students including 13,897 doctoral students, and 881 international students from 87 countries, creating a diverse, open and vibrant international campus.
The university offers international students a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, covering 38 undergraduate, 78 master’s and 89 doctoral programs. It also provides varied opportunities for study and exchange, including research internships and summer and winter camps. A range of scholarships and financial assistance helps outstanding students from around the world pursue their academic aspirations at USTC.
