Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology

The university upholds its fine ethos of “Hard Work and Simplicity, Diligence and a Love of Learning” and its motto, “Cultivate Virtue and Investigate Things; Develop Yourself and Help Others Succeed.” Since its founding, it has educated more than 80000 graduates of various types. Many alumni have become renowned scientists, scholars and senior administrators in China and abroad, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, leaders of central ministries, and senior officials of the World Meteorological Organization. It has more than 30000 full-time undergraduates, over 3900 postgraduate students and more than 1500 teachers. Its experts include more than 60 academicians, Distinguished Young Scholars, Thousand Talents Program participants, nationally selected Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project members, Jiangsu distinguished professors and Jiangsu Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program participants. It has more than 10 national teaching teams, Ministry of Education innovation teams, Jiangsu innovation and entrepreneurship teams and related groups. Of its full-time teachers, 79.7% hold doctorates and 60% have spent at least one year studying or researching overseas. It has 23 schools or departments, including the School of Atmospheric Sciences, and the Changwang Experimental Class. Its facilities include collaborative innovation centers for climate and meteorological disasters and for atmospheric environment and equipment technology, and more than 20 provincial or ministerial research institutions. These include one of the Ministry of Education’s first international joint laboratories for climate and environmental change, the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Meteorological Disasters, the China Meteorological Administration Key Open Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics and Atmospheric Environment, the China Institute of Manufacturing Development, and the Institute of Climate Change and Public Policy.

The university has national key disciplines, provincial or ministerial key disciplines, national distinctive programs, and Jiangsu flagship and distinctive programs. Its 53 undergraduate programs cover 8 disciplinary categories: science, engineering, management, literature, economics, law, agriculture and the arts. Master’s and doctoral degree authorizations broadly cover its undergraduate subject areas. The university places great importance on innovative education and has 27 experimental teaching centers. The Experimental Teaching Center for Atmospheric Sciences and Environmental Meteorology is a national experimental teaching demonstration center, and the Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center for Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorological Information is a national experimental teaching center. Its project, “Development and Practice of a Broad-Based Meteorological Talent Training Model under a Joint Support System,” received a first prize in the National Teaching Achievement Awards. Students have won numerous honors, including a gold medal at the first China Internet+ University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition; the sole national special prize, the Higher Education Press Cup, in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling for university students; a national first prize in the Challenge Cup competition; a national first prize in the university student electronics design competition; and a national special prize in the China Robot Competition. The men’s volleyball team won the 2015-2016 Chinese University Volleyball League championship.

The university actively undertakes international cooperation and has partnerships in talent development and research with 48 renowned universities in 15 countries, including Yale University in the United States. It established a Confucius Institute in the Bahamas and is qualified to admit international students supported by the Chinese Government Scholarship, Hanban scholarships, the Jiangsu Provincial Government Jasmine Scholarship and the Nanjing Municipal Government Scholarship. In 2017, it had 1553 international students from 120 countries. It hosts a World Meteorological Organization Regional Training Centre, which has trained more than 3300 senior meteorological scientists, technical personnel and administrators from 154 countries and regions. It has become the world’s largest such training center by training volume and ranks among the best for quality, receiving high praise and a special commendation from the World Meteorological Organization.
