Introduction to Tianjin University of Science and Technology

Tianjin University of Science and Technology is located beside the Bohai Sea and Hai River. Jointly supported by the central and local governments and prioritized for development by Tianjin, it is a multidisciplinary university emphasizing engineering, with coordinated development in engineering, science, literature, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, law, the arts and education. It is the only university in the Binhai city of Tianjin’s twin-city structure to offer a complete undergraduate, master’s and doctoral education system. Founded in 1958, it was one of China’s first 4 undergraduate institutions specializing in light industry. To date, it has educated more than 220000 graduates.

Facilities and Conditions

The university has two campuses, Binhai and Hexi. The Binhai main campus is in Tianjin Binhai New Area, near the Binhai-Zhongguancun Science Park, Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City, National Maritime Museum and TEDA Aircraft Carrier Theme Park. The Hexi campus is in Tianjin’s Haihe Liulin area, near the Tianjin Cultural Center, National Convention and Exhibition Centre and Binhai International Airport. It covers 1252700 square meters and has 17 teaching units, more than 28000 full-time undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students, and 2219 faculty and staff. It has Binhai New Area’s only Grade A comprehensive gymnasium.

Disciplines and Programs

The university has a national key discipline in fermentation engineering. Light industry technology and engineering, and food science and engineering, were selected for Tianjin’s top university discipline cultivation plan. It offers doctoral degrees in 5 first-level disciplines–light industry technology and engineering, food science and engineering, chemical engineering and technology, mechanical engineering, and marine science–and a professional doctorate in biology and medicine. It offers master’s degrees in 21 first-level disciplines and 13 professional categories. Six subject areas–agricultural sciences, chemistry, biology and biochemistry, engineering, materials science, and environment/ecology–rank in the global ESI top 1%, with agricultural sciences in the global top 1 per thousand. Nine subject areas appear in the U.S. News global rankings, including polymer science in the world’s top 10. Five disciplines were selected among ShanghaiRanking’s Best Chinese Subjects, and food science and engineering ranks 30th in its Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. It has 55 undergraduate admission programs, of which 32 have been selected as national or Tianjin first-class undergraduate program development sites.

Faculty and Teaching

The university has 1528 full-time teachers, 821 professors and associate professors, and 794 doctoral and master’s supervisors. Its faculty includes 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 27 national-level talents including selections for major national talent programs, and 148 provincial or ministerial talents including Tianjin outstanding talents. It has 41 high-level teaching and research teams at national, provincial or ministerial level, including Ministry of Education innovation teams. It was the first in Tianjin to launch a fully credit-based education reform. Teaching platforms include a national virtual simulation experimental center, a national engineering practice education center, a national industry-education consortium, and national bilingual teaching demonstration courses.

Research

The university has 53 national, provincial or ministerial research platforms, including the National Key Laboratory of Bio-Based Fiber Materials, the State Key Laboratory of Food Nutrition and Safety jointly supported by the province and ministry, the National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Metabolic Control Fermentation Technology, and a National Institute for New Rural Development. It has been approved as a national intellectual property pilot university, a national pilot institution for collaborative patent use, and a National Intellectual Property Information Service Center at a university.

International Exchange and Cooperation

The university has academic relationships with 152 universities and research institutions in 44 countries, including Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Japan, Canada and Finland. It also exchanges and cooperates with Belt and Road countries including Russia, Malaysia, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand and Mongolia. It has 2 Chinese-foreign cooperative undergraduate programs and joint training programs with universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Finland, including “2+2,” “1+2+1” and “3+1” integrated bachelor’s-master’s models. It has received international students and visiting scholars from 112 countries for study and visits. It has jointly established a Confucius Institute with Assumption University in Thailand, and Confucius Classrooms with the Yucai Chinese School in Mongolia and Assumption College Thonburi in Thailand. It has 2 national international science and technology cooperation bases and has jointly established several research institutes with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and overseas universities and research institutions.
