Overview of Guizhou Medical University

Guizhou Medical University was founded in 1938 as one of nine national medical colleges under the Ministry of Education at the time. It has two campuses, Beijing Road and Yunman Lake, covering 3646 mu, with 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 10 other affiliated hospitals, 12 teaching hospitals and 135 non-clinical professional practice teaching bases, covering 49 programs. Clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, chemistry, agricultural sciences, plant and animal science, general social sciences, and molecular biology and genetics rank in the global ESI top 1%.

Guizhou Medical University is a provincial key university in Guizhou offering a complete medical education system from bachelor’s to master’s and doctoral degrees. It has 2258 full-time teachers, including 1279 with senior professional titles and 1233 with doctorates. It has one of the Ministry of Education’s first bases for research commercialization and technology transfer, one of the first national clinical teaching and training demonstration centers, one of the first national modern industry schools, a national innovation and entrepreneurship education practice base, a national off-campus practice education base for university students, 2 national experimental teaching centers and 1 national virtual teaching and research office. It also has one of the Ministry of Education’s first pilot schools or departments for comprehensive reform of education by all staff, throughout the process and across all aspects, is a pilot institution for the ministry’s comprehensive reform of moral education mechanisms, and has a national demonstration one-stop university student community. It has 11 national or ministerial platforms, including the National Key Laboratory for Discovering and Utilizing Active Components of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 22 provincial research platforms, as well as 38 innovation or talent teams at provincial or ministerial level or above.

The university began admitting international students in 2014 and has admitted more than 300 from 16 countries: Pakistan, Ghana, the United States, India, Nigeria, Tanzania, Cambodia, Nepal, Japan, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Liberia, Laos, Vietnam, Cameroon and Indonesia. In 2017, it passed quality accreditation for international education in Chinese higher education institutions, becoming the first university in Guizhou to do so. In 2021, its international student clinical medicine program passed accreditation by the Pakistan Medical Commission. In 2022, its teaching achievement, “Exploration and Practice of a System for Developing International Medical Talent at a Local Medical University,” received a third prize in the Guizhou Teaching Achievement Awards. In 2023, its international education passed accreditation by the US Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. In 2025, it passed accreditation by the UK’s General Medical Council, and its first international student passed the UK medical licensing examination.
