Jiamusi University

Jiamusi University is China’s easternmost higher education institution, one of the one hundred universities supported by the national Project for Basic Capacity Building of Universities in Central and Western China, the only comprehensive university in Heilongjiang with medical disciplines, and a high-level university prioritized for development by the province. It is located in Jiamusi, China’s eastern frontier, a city recognized for its ecological appeal and known as the “small Yan’an of the northeast.” Its administrative area lies on the Sanjiang Plain, with the Sanjiang Wetland, one of the world’s three great wetlands, the internationally renowned Heixiazi Island and distinctive Hezhe culture. It is the birthplace of the Beidahuang spirit, an important national commodity grain production base, and the first place in China to greet the sunrise.

The university was founded on July 20, 1947. In 1995, with approval from the former State Education Commission, Jiamusi Medical College, Jiamusi Institute of Technology, Jiamusi Teachers College and the former municipally administered Jiamusi University merged to form the present institution. After 2000, Jiamusi Grain Workers Secondary Vocational School, Fujin Normal School and Heilongjiang Polytechnic School were successively incorporated. The university has four campuses in Jiamusi, with a campus area of 1346600 square meters and total land area of 2466200 square meters. The main campus lies between Sifeng Mountain to the south and the Songhua River to the north, with greenery and picturesque scenery throughout. It has been designated a provincial Civilized Campus and one of the province’s first Green Campuses. In 2025, it established a Fuyuan campus in Fuyuan City, aiming to create a new model of university-locality collaboration, a new platform for industry-education integration and a new gateway for opening northward.

The university has total assets of RMB 2.131 billion, including RMB 450 million in teaching and research equipment, with advanced facilities and abundant resources. It has diverse teaching, research and internship bases, including Fujin Farm and Sifeng Farm, and innovative practice platforms such as an Engineering Training Center and a government-university-enterprise new e-commerce talent training base. A major comprehensive experimental and practical training building covers more than 30000 square meters. Five quiet, comfortable postgraduate residence buildings, 24 modern, convenient undergraduate residence buildings, well-equipped international student residences, and 5 student dining halls with 140 food-service counters bring together varied cuisines and spaces for dining and academic exchange, creating a complete environment for living and learning. The university also has first-class cultural and sports facilities, including a concert hall, art museum, comprehensive gymnasium, standard swimming pool and athletics field. It has clay and hard tennis courts meeting the standards of the four international major tournaments, as well as dedicated ice hockey, speed skating and other winter sports venues. Its comprehensive smart campus system provides integrated wired and wireless networks across all campuses. Combining traditional and digital resources with educational and service functions, its well-organized and richly stocked library is an ideal place for focused study.

The university’s disciplines and programs cover 11 categories: literature, science, engineering, medicine, law, agriculture, economics, education, history, management and the arts. It has a complete bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree awarding system, with doctoral degrees in 2 first-level disciplines, master’s degrees in 14 first-level disciplines and 1 second-level discipline, and 16 professional master’s degree categories. It has 2 postdoctoral research stations, 3 postdoctoral research workstations and 1 postdoctoral innovation practice base. Clinical medicine ranks in the global ESI top 1%. It has established 17 Dongji academic teams, a provincial Leading Goose team for developing new biomedical dental implants and supporting equipment, and a provincial Spring Goose team studying nutritional and dietary prevention and treatment of gout and hyperuricemia. It also has 2 distinctive provincial Double First-Class disciplines and supporting platforms: northern medicinal resources and functional foods, and dental biomedical materials development and personalized manufacturing.

The university has friendly partnerships with 26 universities and research institutions in 7 countries and regions, including Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Malaysia. Participating actively in the Belt and Road Initiative, it aims to become a bridgehead for educational openness toward the north in eastern Heilongjiang and draws on its location to build a Northeast Asian center for educational and academic exchange. Activities it initiated and hosts, including the China Heilongjiang-Russian Far East University Student Mathematics and Computer Competition and the Heilongjiang-Amur International Research and Education Forum, have become signature regional educational exchange projects with Russia. It is an entrusted institution for the Chinese Government Scholarship, Heilongjiang Provincial Government Scholarship and the international industry-university-research-application postgraduate program jointly supervised by Chinese and foreign mentors. It has joined the Sino-Russian Medical University Alliance. International students from 27 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa and South America currently study here.

Jiamusi University is an entrusted institution for the Chinese Government Scholarship program with independent recruitment authority. For 2026/2027, it also offers the Ministry of Education-Heilongjiang Joint Scholarship Program for International Students from Eurasian Countries, providing full scholarships for doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees to students from 13 Eurasian countries: Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Moldova, Azerbaijan and Mongolia.
