Harbin Engineering University is located beside the beautiful Songhua River in Harbin, northern China’s Ice City. Its predecessor was the renowned Harbin Military Engineering Institute, founded in 1953. It was among the first national key universities included in Project 211 and joined the national Project 985 Innovation Platform for Advantageous Disciplines initiative. It has a graduate school, a national university science park, and 23 teaching schools, departments, divisions and centers. It is China’s largest talent training base and an important research base in the Three Seas and One Nuclear field: shipbuilding, marine equipment, ocean development and nuclear applications. It has 12 postdoctoral research stations or workstations, 2 postdoctoral workstations, 12 first-level doctoral degree fields, 29 first-level master’s degree fields, and 34 undergraduate programs or program groups admitting students. It has 3006 faculty and staff, including 8 academicians, 477 doctoral supervisors and 1062 full and associate professors. It has 28278 students, including 15124 undergraduates, 7759 postgraduate students and 1453 international students.

In shipbuilding, marine and nuclear fields, it has nationally leading or internationally advanced technologies in underwater robots, ship motion stabilization, marine propulsion, integrated navigation, underwater acoustic positioning, nuclear power simulation, and large-ship simulation and validation. It has become a major contributor to national basic and applied research in ship science and technology and an important supporting institution for China’s marine high-technology development.

It has more than 40 research institutions and over 150 research and teaching laboratories, including 2 national defense science and technology key laboratories, 2 national defense key discipline laboratories, 3 national disciplinary innovation and international expertise introduction bases, 1 national electrical and electronic teaching base, 6 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 1 national university student cultural quality education base. Its library holds 2.2609 million books.

It pursues international and open education and has close partnerships with more than 100 renowned universities, enterprises and research institutions worldwide, including the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Sydney, Far Eastern State Technical University in Russia, Seoul National University in South Korea, Hokkaido University in Japan, the world’s five major classification societies, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It has established the Confucius Institute at South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University in Ukraine. It was among the first institutions in the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program and implements the Chinese Government Scholarship and national government-sponsored postgraduate program for building high-level universities. It offers the Harbin Engineering University HEU Scholarship for International Students and Confucius Institute Scholarship. Seventy percent of its master’s and doctoral programs can be taught in English.
