Harbin University of Science and Technology

Located in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, Harbin University of Science and Technology is included in the national Central and Western China Higher Education Basic Capacity Building Project and jointly supported by the Heilongjiang Provincial People’s Government and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. After more than 60 years of development, it has become a strong and distinctive teaching and research university led by engineering and combining science and engineering, with coordinated development across 8 categories: philosophy, economics, law, literature, science, engineering, management and interdisciplinary studies. It is approved by the Ministry of Education to admit international students and educate Chinese Government Scholarship students. It has 4 campus areas: East, West and South in Harbin, and Rongcheng Campus in Rongcheng, Shandong Province. It has more than 2400 faculty and staff and 32200 full-time students.

It has 15 schools, 1 research institute, 1 teaching department, and 30 Party and administrative departments and teaching support units. It offers 69 undergraduate programs, including 23 national and 16 provincial first-class undergraduate program development sites; 17 programs have passed engineering education accreditation. It has 8 national Category I distinctive programs, 3 national Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program pilot programs, 1 national pilot program for comprehensive undergraduate program reform, 19 provincial key programs, 6 provincial pilot programs for comprehensive undergraduate program reform, and 2 provincial Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program pilot programs. It has 1 national university science park, 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 6 national engineering practice education centers, and 2 national off-campus practical education bases for university students. It has 1 national quality shared-resource course, 2 national quality open video courses, 24 national first-class undergraduate courses and 70 provincial first-class undergraduate courses.

It has 8 first-level disciplines authorized to award doctoral degrees, 23 authorized to award master’s degrees, and 11 professional master’s degree categories. It has 1 national key discipline, 10 provincial key disciplines, 5 distinctive national defense disciplinary directions, and 11 Heilongjiang domestic first-class development or cultivation disciplines. Seven disciplines have postdoctoral research stations: Electrical Engineering, Instrument Science and Technology, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Management Science and Engineering, Business Administration, and Computer Science and Technology.

It has 32 research platforms at provincial level or above, including 1 jointly established national key laboratory, 7 key laboratories, engineering research centers and collaborative innovation centers supported by national ministries, 23 provincial key laboratories, international joint laboratories, engineering technology research centers and collaborative innovation centers, and 1 provincial priority high-end think tank under cultivation. It has jointly established 6 provincial industrial technology research institutes with enterprises. It publishes 4 academic journals: Electric Machines and Control, Journal of Harbin University of Science and Technology, Journal of Science and Technology Management, and Ideological and Political Education Research.

It continually expands channels for international exchange and cooperation. It is a member of the Association of Universities of Northeast China and the Russian Far East and Siberia, the China–Central and Eastern European Countries Higher Education Institutions Consortium, the China-Ukraine University Alliance, the Sino-Russian Union of Language Education Universities, and the Sino-Russian Creative Design Alliance, and an observer of the University Alliance of the Silk Road. It has friendly inter-university partnerships with 100 high-level overseas universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries and regions, actively conducting substantive cooperation in joint student training, faculty academic exchange and collaborative research.

Over more than 60 years, it has educated tens of thousands of outstanding professionals for China’s manufacturing industries. It is known in society as “the cradle of modern engineers” and among enterprises and industry as the “Whampoa Military Academy” of the wire and cable industry. Looking ahead, its basic development approach is to maintain enrollment scale, improve educational quality, strengthen distinctive characteristics and consolidate its foundations as a high-level teaching and research university, working toward that goal.
