Jiangnan University traces its educational history to 1902. It is a national key university directly administered by the Ministry of Education and included in Project 211 and the Double First-Class initiative. Its disciplines cover 12 categories: science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, literature, history, law, economics, management, education, art and interdisciplinary studies. Food Science, Fermentation Engineering, Textile Engineering and Design are renowned in China and abroad, while programs such as Business Administration and Computer Science and Technology are increasingly favored by international students.

Disciplinary strengths

In national first-level discipline assessments organized by the Ministry of Education, Food Science and Engineering, Light Industry Technology and Engineering, and Design received A+ ratings. In the 2026 ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, Food Science and Engineering ranked first worldwide for the eighth consecutive year, Textile Science and Engineering ranked second, and Bioengineering ranked fifth. In the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), 15 disciplines rank in the global top 1%. Chemistry, Biology and Biochemistry, and Engineering rank in the top 1‰, while Agricultural Sciences ranks in the top 0.1‰.

Faculty

It has more than 21000 full-time undergraduates and over 14000 postgraduate students. Its 3420 faculty and staff include 2177 full-time teachers and 1992 postgraduate supervisors. Among full-time teachers, 71.9% hold senior professional titles, 79.1% hold doctoral degrees, and 49.6% have at least one year of overseas study or research experience.

International education

It began admitting international students in 1964 and has educated students from over 100 countries and regions. It offers the Jiangnan University Outstanding Student Scholarship to support international students.

Location

It is in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. Located in the Yangtze River Delta, Wuxi has beautiful scenery and is one of China’s most livable cities.
