Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Shanghai Jiao Tong University was founded in 1896 as Nanyang Public School. It is one of China’s oldest and most renowned higher education institutions, a national key university directly administered by the Ministry of Education and jointly developed with Shanghai Municipality. Over more than a century, it has trained over 400000 outstanding graduates who have become leaders in many fields. Distinguished alumni include the statesman Jiang Zemin; Qian Xuesen, “the father of China’s aerospace program”; and recipients of the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award, mathematician Wu Wenjun, chemist Xu Guangxian and hematologist Wang Zhenyi. Over 200 alumni are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 6 of the country’s 23 “Two Bombs, One Satellite” heroes are alumni. In science, technology, education, medicine and other fields, its community has contributed to many firsts in modern Chinese history: China’s earliest internal combustion engine, electric motor and Chinese typewriter; the People’s Republic’s first ten-thousand-ton ship, nuclear submarine, hovercraft and hydrofoil; the first independently designed generation of fighter aircraft; the first launch vehicle and artificial satellite; the first mitral commissurotomy, successful orthotopic allogeneic liver transplant and successful surgery rescuing a patient with extensive burns; the first university translation publishing institution; the largest local-document collection; and China’s first member in the humanities and social sciences of a European academy. These embody the work and wisdom of teachers, students and alumni. After over 120 years, it has become a first-class Chinese and internationally renowned university that is comprehensive, research-oriented and international.
