Wuhan University of Technology

Wuhan University of Technology is a national key university directly administered by the Ministry of Education. It was among the first universities included in the national Project 211 and Double First-Class initiatives, and is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Transport and other ministries. Its history dates back to Hubei Technical School, established in 1898. Over 128 years, particularly during the past nearly 70 years, the university has trained more than 700000 senior professionals. Among universities directly administered by the Ministry of Education, it has trained the largest number of professionals for the three industries of building materials and construction, transportation, and automobiles. It is an important Chinese base for high-level talent training and technological innovation in these three industries. It currently has more than 37000 regular undergraduates and over 24000 doctoral and master’s students. Its annual international student enrollment exceeds 1200.

Through its long educational practice, the university has developed a distinctive educational philosophy. The university has Mafangshan, Yujiatou and Nanhu campuses, covering nearly 4000 mu, with a total building floor area of 2.461 million square meters. Its 4 modern libraries hold more than 4.25 million books. It has 35 teaching and research units and over 5000 faculty and staff, including more than 190 selected for national talent programs or projects and over 640 selected for provincial or ministerial talent programs or projects.

The university has developed an engineering-led disciplinary and program system in which science, engineering, economics, management, art, literature, law and interdisciplinary studies are integrated and develop in coordination. It has 23 first-level disciplines authorized to award doctoral degrees, 45 first-level disciplines authorized to award master’s degrees, and 21 postdoctoral research stations; it also offers 6 professional doctoral degree categories and 27 professional master’s degree categories. Materials Science and Engineering has been selected for both rounds of the national Double First-Class discipline initiative. The university has 103 undergraduate programs, including 54 national first-class undergraduate program development sites, 15 nationally distinctive programs, 28 pilot programs under the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, 4 national pilot programs for comprehensive reform, and 2 programs in national strategic emerging industries. It has 87 national first-class undergraduate courses, 17 national quality shared-resource courses, 8 national quality open video courses, and 3 national model courses integrating ideological and political education. It has 5 national teaching teams, 4 Ministry of Education experimental zones for innovative talent training models, 4 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 13 national engineering practice education centers, 1 internationalization demonstration school, 1 national makerspace, 1 national university science park, 1 national innovation and entrepreneurship school, and 5 national virtual teaching and research offices. It also has one each of the following: a national engineering chemistry teaching base, a national university student cultural quality education base, a base for the inheritance of fine traditional Chinese culture and art, a national university practical education innovation and entrepreneurship base, a national model entrepreneurship incubation base, and a national university graduate employability training base. It has been approved to establish a National School of Outstanding Engineers.

The university focuses on developing talent capable of leading scientific frontiers, industry innovation and regional development, strengthens the enabling role of artificial intelligence, and is accelerating the development of a high-quality talent training system. Over the past five years, it has educated a number of exemplary university students nationwide: 1 received the title of National Model of Self-Improvement, 1 was named a Young Pioneer of the New Era, 2 were named National Outstanding Communist Youth League Members, 3 received the China Youth Volunteer Outstanding Individual Award, and 15 were named Chinese University Students’ Stars of Self-Improvement. For the past ten years, the proportion of graduates with confirmed post-graduation destinations has consistently been at least 95%; more than 1/3 of employed graduates have joined Fortune Global 500 companies. In July 2023, China Central Television’s Focus Report featured the university’s graduate employment work.

The university has 58 national, provincial and ministerial research bases, including the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing, the National Key Laboratory of Silicate Science and Advanced Building Materials, the National Engineering Research Center for Fiber Optic Sensing Technology and Networks, the National Engineering Research Center for Water Transport Safety, the National Key Laboratory of Waterway Traffic Control, the National Key Laboratory of Advanced Glass Materials, and the National Key Laboratory of High-Temperature Light Alloys and Application Technologies. It has 3 provincial or ministerial collaborative innovation platforms: the transportation industry collaborative innovation platform for intelligent inland shipping, the Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center for Automotive Parts Technology, and the Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center for Safety Warning and Emergency Response Coordination Technology. It has been approved as a pilot institution for building China into a transport powerhouse and selected among the first national intellectual property demonstration universities and the second group of university bases for commercialization of scientific and technological achievements and technology transfer. Together with local governments and industry enterprises, it has established 169 organizations for scientific cooperation and commercialization, including research institutes outside its home location, industry-university-research service platforms, and university-enterprise scientific cooperation platforms. The university received 5 National Science and Technology Awards for 2023, including 3 as the lead institution, placing it among the leading Chinese universities. Over the past five years, it has received 1 National Natural Science Award, 2 National Technological Invention Awards, and 2 National Science and Technology Progress Awards; it has received 183 provincial or ministerial science and technology awards at first prize or above, including 69 as the lead institution. It has been granted 6087 invention patents and received 7 China Patent Awards as the first patent holder. With the university as the first institution, it has published 2 papers in Science and 6 in Nature, two of the world’s leading academic journals.

The university has established relationships for talent training, academic exchange and research cooperation with more than 110 universities and research institutions in countries and regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Canada, Australia, Russia and the Netherlands. It has also established Hubei’s only Sino-French joint education institution, the Wuhan University of Technology–Aix-Marseille Institute, and 20 high-level international research cooperation platforms with renowned overseas universities and research institutions. It has successively established 12 national international science and technology cooperation bases, including the International Joint Laboratory for Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Environment-Friendly Building Materials, and the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Intelligent Shipping and Maritime Safety. It hosted the world’s first World Forum of University Leaders in Materials Science and Engineering, successfully held the parallel sessions “AI Empowering STEM Education” and “International Artificial Intelligence and Education” at the 2025 World Digital Education Conference, and hosted high-level international conferences including the first Global Chinese Materials Conference and the third Nature Conference on Renewable Energy-Driven Carbon Dioxide Conversion. It initiated the Belt and Road Alliance of Universities of Science and Technology. The Confucius Institute jointly established with the University of Lorraine in France was awarded the title of Advanced Confucius Institute.
