Fujian Normal University

Fujian Normal University is located in Fuzhou, a historic and cultural city known as the “coastal land of Confucian learning.” It is a century-old provincially administered institution with a long history and an excellent reputation. It originated from Fujian Superior Normal School, founded in 1907 by Chen Baochen, a tutor to the Qing emperor. Following several reorganizations and mergers involving Hwa Nan Women’s College, Fukien Christian University and Fujian Provincial Teachers College, Fujian Teachers College was established in 1953. It was renamed Fujian Normal University in 1972 and has used that name ever since. In 2012, the People’s Government of Fujian Province and the Ministry of Education began jointly supporting the university. It was designated a high-level university prioritized for development by Fujian in 2014, a participating university in Fujian’s first-class university development initiative in 2018, and a Class A institution in the province’s second round of Double First-Class development in 2022.

The university uses its leading disciplines to drive development, building a system of first-class humanities, high-level sciences and distinctive engineering. It has broadly established the disciplinary structure of a comprehensive university. It has 1 national key discipline, 9 Fujian peak disciplines and 13 Fujian plateau disciplines, 2 disciplines for excellence cultivation and 3 backbone disciplines in Fujian’s second round of Double First-Class development, 20 postdoctoral research stations, doctoral degrees in 19 first-level disciplines and 4 professional categories, master’s degrees in 32 first-level disciplines and 27 professional categories. Ten disciplines rank in the global ESI top 1%, including 5 in the top 5 per thousand.

Taking advantage of its location in the core area of the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road and its proximity to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, the university deepens external exchange and cooperation. It has friendly partnerships with nearly 200 universities and research institutions in countries and regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia and Japan, and with UNESCO. It has substantive partnerships with several universities in Taiwan. Its overseas Chinese language education has grown in scale and developed distinctive features. To date, it has sent 24 batches totaling 1115 volunteer placements to 29 countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and the United States. It has jointly established 2 Confucius Institutes with Angeles University Foundation in the Philippines and Al-Azhar University in Indonesia, generating a positive impact in China and abroad.
