East China University of Science and Technology

East China University of Science and Technology is located in Shanghai, China’s economic, financial, trade and shipping center. Founded in 1952 as East China Institute of Chemical Technology, it is a national key university directly under China’s Ministry of Education, the first university in the People’s Republic of China renowned for chemical engineering, a key institution under Project 211 and the Project 985 Innovation Platforms for Advantageous Disciplines, and a national Double First-Class university. It is a distinctive research university with coordinated multidisciplinary development. In the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database of the US Institute for Scientific Information, 5 disciplines rank in the global top 1%: chemistry, materials science, engineering, biology and biochemistry, and pharmacology and toxicology. In 2014, chemical engineering and technology passed US ABET engineering education accreditation, becoming China’s earliest program to do so.

The university comprises Xuhui campus, Fengxian campus and Jinshan Science and Technology Park. It has 20 schools, 64 undergraduate programs across 11 categories–science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, the arts, philosophy and education–196 master’s programs and 95 doctoral programs. These include 1 English-taught undergraduate, 16 English-taught master’s and 20 English-taught doctoral programs. It has 12 postdoctoral research stations, 7 national key disciplines, 1 national key discipline under cultivation, 10 Shanghai key disciplines, 7 Shanghai university first-class disciplines and 3 Double First-Class disciplines. It has more than 3000 faculty and staff and nearly 26000 students, including nearly 1400 international students from 100 countries.

Authorized by the Ministry of Education to recruit international students, it began receiving and educating them in 1956 and has since educated more than ten thousand from over 140 countries. The School of International Education, established in 2006 on the main Xuhui campus, is the university’s gateway for international students, responsible for recruitment, admission, teaching coordination, daily administration and living services. International students apply through the school for undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees and specialist study. Its Chinese Language Teaching Center offers long- and short-term language training, short courses in Chinese language and culture, and customized training. Following a people-centered, student-service philosophy, it strives to create a positive learning and living environment for international students.
