Guangxi University was founded in 1928 in picturesque Nanning, Guangxi’s capital, known as the Green City. It is Guangxi’s oldest and largest comprehensive university and its only institution under the national Project 211. It is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and Guangxi, participates in the Plan to Enhance the Comprehensive Strength of Universities in Central and Western China and the One Province, One University initiative, and is a world-class discipline development university.
It has 27 schools spanning 11 categories: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and the arts. It offers 98 undergraduate programs; in 2017, 79 recruited students, including 24 grouped into 9 broad admission categories. It offers master’s degrees in 36 first-level and 16 additional second-level disciplines not covered by first-level authorizations, doctoral degrees in 8 first-level and 3 additional second-level disciplines not covered by first-level authorizations, 16 professional master’s categories and 10 postdoctoral research stations. It has 1 national Double First-Class disciplinary cluster, 2 national key disciplines and 1 national key discipline under cultivation. Engineering, materials science and agricultural sciences rank in the global ESI top 1%. It has 1 national key laboratory, 1 cultivation base for a national key laboratory jointly supported by the province and ministry, 3 Ministry of Education key laboratories and engineering research centers, 1 Ministry of Education country and regional studies research base, 1 State Forestry Administration key laboratory, and a range of laboratories, engineering technology research centers and research bases prioritized by Guangxi. It has 4 Guangxi Plan 2011 collaborative innovation centers and cultivation bases, 1 Guangxi key humanities and social sciences research base and 6 key humanities and social sciences research bases at Guangxi universities.
The university strengthens faculty quality and high-level talent development and recruitment, building a highly qualified, ethical, skilled, well-structured and energetic workforce. It has 3662 serving staff in established posts, including 630 with full senior and 1118 with associate senior professional and technical appointments, 1 at professional and technical grade one, 73 at grade two including 24 with extended retirement, and 4 lifetime professors. It has 2110 full-time teachers, 325 doctoral supervisors and 1783 master’s supervisors.
