Yanshan University

Yanshan University is a national key university jointly supported by four parties: the People’s Government of Hebei Province, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. It is a university receiving priority support from Hebei for national first-class university and world-class discipline development, and a member of the Beijing High-Tech Universities Alliance.

The university originated from Harbin Institute of Technology and was founded in 1920. It was designated a national key higher education institution in 1978. It covers 4000 mu, with 1.25 million square meters of buildings. It has 40000 students in regular higher education and 3200 faculty and staff, including 2200 full-time teachers, among them 538 professors, 925 associate professors and 551 doctoral supervisors. Its faculty includes 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 member of the State Council’s discipline evaluation groups, and 30 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars or National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars.

The university has 12 postdoctoral research stations, doctoral degrees in 14 first-level disciplines and 3 professional categories, master’s degrees in 30 first-level disciplines and 19 professional categories, and 60 undergraduate programs. It has formed a disciplinary structure centered on engineering with joint development across 9 categories: engineering, economics, law, education, literature, science, management, the arts and interdisciplinary studies. It has 5 national key disciplines, 5 national defense distinctive disciplines and 16 provincial key disciplines. Six disciplines–engineering, materials science, chemistry, computer science, environmental science and ecology, and physics–rank in the global ESI top 1%. Engineering ranks in the global top 1 per thousand.

The university actively advances international educational openness and is building a high-quality network of core global partners. It has friendly partnerships with more than 140 high-level overseas universities and research institutions in over 30 countries and regions, with long-term, extensive cooperation in Chinese-foreign cooperative education, faculty and student exchange, and research. It currently has around 500 or more international students from nearly 50 countries, covering visiting students, preparatory students, undergraduates, master’s students and doctoral students. It offers long- and short-term Chinese-language training at elementary, intermediate and advanced levels and has an HSK test center. It provides the Hebei Provincial Government Scholarship and Yanshan University International Student Scholarship for outstanding international students. Students from around the world are welcome to study its various academic programs and Chinese-language courses.
