Zhejiang Sci-Tech University

Zhejiang Sci-Tech University has a long history and is located in Hangzhou, a historic and cultural city, on more than 2100 mu.

Its predecessor, the Sericulture Academy, was founded in 1897 by Hangzhou Prefect Lin Qi to advance his ambition of strengthening the country through industry and education. It was one of China’s earliest institutions of modern education. In 1908, the Qing government approved its upgrade to the Advanced School of Sericulture in recognition of its achievements. From the 1911 Revolution to the eve of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, political turmoil brought repeated name changes, relocations and hardships, but the school continued to operate. After 1949, it entered a new period of progress. It began admitting undergraduates in 1959, was named Zhejiang Institute of Silk Textiles by the State Council in 1964, began admitting master’s students in 1979 and gained master’s degree awarding authority in 1983. With Ministry of Education approval, it was renamed Zhejiang Institute of Science and Technology in 1999 and Zhejiang Sci-Tech University in 2004. It gained doctoral degree awarding authority in 2006 and authorization in 2010 to recommend outstanding graduating undergraduates for master’s study without an entrance examination. In 2017, it became a Zhejiang university prioritized for development.

Today it is a provincial university emphasizing engineering, with distinctive strengths and coordinated development in science, engineering, literature, economics, management, law, the arts and education. It has 17 schools or teaching and research departments and operates 1 independent college. It has more than 27000 full-time students, including over 3500 postgraduate students. Its 63 undergraduate programs include 8 national Ministry of Education distinctive programs, 1 Ministry of Education comprehensive reform pilot, 6 pilots under the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, 3 Ministry of Education-Autodesk comprehensive program reform projects, 7 provincial advantageous programs and 5 provincial distinctive programs under the 13th Five-Year Plan. It has 2 national bilingual teaching demonstration courses and 2 Ministry of Education flagship English-taught courses for international students in China.

Its strong workforce has more than 2000 faculty and staff, including over 880 with associate senior or higher titles and more than 260 with full senior titles. It has 2 Ministry of Education innovation teams, 7 provincial key science and technology innovation teams, 1 provincial key cultural innovation team and 5 provincial university innovation teams.

Emphasizing research, it continually improves academic standards and has completed national science and technology plan projects and national, provincial and ministerial foundation projects across many fields. It has received 7 second prizes in the State Technological Invention Awards, 5 second prizes and 1 third prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Awards, 1 Lu Xun Literary Prize and 1 Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award. In the past five years, it has received more than 150 provincial or ministerial awards. Its overall science and technology indicators have consistently placed it among the leaders at Zhejiang’s provincial universities.

It pursues openness and has partnerships with more than 100 educational and research institutions in over 20 countries and regions. It has jointly established 2 Confucius Institutes with the University of Mauritius and the University of Suriname, and international student education is developing rapidly.
