Shandong University

Shandong University’s predecessor was Shandong Imperial College, founded in 1901, and it is regarded as one of the founding institutions of modern higher education in China. Its medical discipline dates to 1864, pioneering modern higher medical education in China. Since its establishment, the university has passed through several historical stages: Shandong Imperial College, National Qingdao University, National Shandong University, Shandong University, and the new Shandong University formed by merging the former Shandong University, Shandong Medical University and Shandong University of Technology. For more than 120 years, it has upheld the mission of “cultivating talent for the world and seeking prosperity and strength for the nation,” practiced the spirit of its motto, “Learning Without End, Spirit Noble and Upright,” and worked with determination across generations. It has developed a university ethos of “Seeking Truth and Innovation,” educated many outstanding people with both integrity and ability, and made important contributions to national and regional economic and social development.

Shandong University has one of the most comprehensive ranges of disciplines in China and is representative of the country’s comprehensive universities. It currently has 53 first-level disciplines authorized to award doctoral degrees, 56 first-level disciplines authorized to award master’s degrees, 11 professional doctoral degree categories, 37 professional master’s degree categories, 100 undergraduate programs admitting students, and 45 postdoctoral research stations. These cover all disciplinary categories except agriculture and military science. It has more than 70000 students and operates as one university in three locations: Jinan, Weihai and Qingdao. The university is working to become a new hub for talent. It currently has 19 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering (including appointed members), 263 nationally recognized leading talents, and 345 recipients of the four national young talent programs. It has 11 national key laboratories, 4 Ministry of Education key research bases in the humanities and social sciences, and 7 other national research platforms in the humanities and social sciences. It has 4 directly affiliated hospitals, including Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, and has signed cooperation agreements with over 300 universities and research institutions in 45 countries and regions.
