Founded in 1956, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was one of the first four traditional Chinese medicine higher education institutions established after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and municipal government and is a high-level university designated for priority development by Shanghai.
Traditional Chinese Medicine and Traditional Chinese Pharmacy have been selected repeatedly for the national Double First-Class discipline initiative and included in its excellence development group. Its doctoral degree programs cover all disciplines in traditional Chinese medicine and pharmacy. It also has 16 master’s degree authorization fields and 18 undergraduate programs.
In 1974, the World Health Organization (WHO) commissioned it to offer an Acupuncture Training Course for Foreign Doctors. In 1983, WHO designated it the China Shanghai International Acupuncture Training Center and a Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine. In 2009, it undertook the secretariat of the ISO Technical Committee for Traditional Chinese Medicine (ISO/TC 249).
It has research, teaching and medical partnerships with over 60 overseas educational institutions, medical research institutions and international organizations in more than 20 countries and regions. It jointly offers overseas degree education in traditional Chinese medicine with institutions in countries and regions including Thailand, Malaysia, Malta, the United Kingdom, Germany and France. In 2023, it established a Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine with the University of West Attica in Greece. It has established overseas traditional Chinese medicine centers in countries including the United Kingdom, Malta, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Morocco and Thailand, continually promoting internationalization in traditional Chinese medicine.
After nearly 70 years of development, it has become a traditional Chinese medicine university whose teaching, research and major disciplines rank among the national leaders. In recent years, international student numbers have increased annually, reaching approximately 3000 or more student visits per year, the highest among China’s traditional Chinese medicine institutions.
